In 1590 an outer wall of the fort was built during the rule of Akbar as part of his plans for a new  capital but it was never completed until a fort was built in 1808 during rule of Atta Mohammad Khan of Durrani Empire. The Hari Parbat / Koh i Maran holds religious significance for Pandits, Muslims and Sikhs - Sharika Mata Temple(Chakreshwar Temple) , Makhdoom Sahib Shrine on the southern Side and Gurdwara Chatti Patshahi at Kathi Darwaza (Rainawari side).
Jamia Masjid mosque was founded by Sultan Sikander in 1394 and completed in 1402, and is regarded as one of the most important mosques of Kashmir.
